Every Mile Has A Purpose: Meet Reach Athlete Joel Staley
Reading Time: 4 minutes
Joel is taking on an Ironman while facing cancer, with the goal of raising $100,000 for other families facing cancer.
For families facing cancer, the financial impact of a diagnosis can be overwhelming. Medical bills are only part of the story. Rent, groceries, transportation, utilities, and other everyday expenses don’t stop when treatment begins.
For Family Reach Athlete Joel Staley, this reality is personal.
While going through cancer treatment himself, Joel witnessed firsthand how financial challenges can add another layer of stress to an already difficult journey. He also saw how meaningful financial support can give families something invaluable: the ability to focus on healing instead of worrying about how they will make ends meet.
Now, Joel is turning his experience into action.
From Cancer Treatment to IRONMAN Training

Joel is currently training for IRONMAN Florida on November 7th, 2026, taking on months of demanding physical preparation while continuing his own recovery from cancer.
But this journey is about much more than crossing a finish line.
As a Reach Athlete, Joel has set an ambitious goal: raise $100,000 for Family Reach to help families facing cancer afford the everyday essentials that make treatment possible.
Every training session, every mile, and every challenge along the way is an opportunity for Joel to raise awareness about the financial barriers that can accompany cancer — and to help make sure other families don’t have to face those barriers alone.
“I chose to represent Family Reach because their mission aligns perfectly with my own experience. While fighting cancer, I saw firsthand how financial support allows families to focus on healing instead of worrying about bills. As I train for IRONMAN Florida during my own recovery, I want every mile to help raise awareness and funds for families facing the same challenges. This journey is about turning one family’s struggle into hope and practical relief for many others.”
The Reach Athlete Way

Family Reach Reach Athletes use their personal passions, platforms, and determination to fuel a larger purpose: helping families afford the everyday essentials that cancer can put out of reach.
Whether they’re running a marathon, cycling, swimming, competing in an endurance event, or taking on another personal challenge, Reach Athletes help shine a light on an often-overlooked reality of cancer: treatment is not the only cost of a diagnosis.
For families already facing the physical and emotional toll of cancer, the added burden of paying for food, housing, transportation, and utilities can force impossible choices.
Reach Athletes like Joel are helping change that.
His journey is a reminder that one person’s experience can become a catalyst for helping thousands of others. His miles can start conversations. His fundraising can provide practical support. And his story can help families feel less alone.
