Memorial Messages 2021
Jon Berndt
With a mission to remove the financial barriers standing between cancer patients and their treatment, Family Reach values the power of collaboration to do more for the families we serve. And sometimes that collaboration comes in the form of a special individual who is drawn to our unique mission and does everything possible to push it forward.
One such individual was Jon Berndt, Senior VP of Sales at Exelixis and a life-long supporter of Family Reach. Described by colleagues as unconventional (wearing jeans to a corporate job and treating employees like “family”), it may be no surprise that Berndt was drawn to the Family Reach mission.
“Every chance he got, he talked about Family Reach,” remembered Chris Wiatrak, co-founder of Family Reach and member of its Board of Directors. “He was very passionate about patients and gravitated toward our mission. He wanted to be a part of it.”
Wiatrak further described Jon as “the life of the party” with a big heart.
Peter Kern, VP of Sales at Exelixis, had similar memories surrounding Jon, saying that “everything he ever did was to benefit patients and families.”
Even in his passing, Jon’s impact grows — all thanks to his love for the Family Reach mission and doing whatever he could to make the lives of families facing cancer a little bit better.
Thank you, Jon Berndt. Your memory will live on through the families you continue to help.
We were so sorry to hear of Jon’s passing and will always remember how proud he was of his family, especially watching the kids play basketball. Sending love to Cyndi, Kyle and Natalie during this difficult time.
-Brian, Bridgette, Andrew, Madeleine, William and Matthew Thompson
Inspiration to all. RIP.
-Alves Family
I had the good fortune to work with Jon a number of times throughout the years given my role as an extended member of his biopharma employer’s corporate communications team. He was wonderful to interact with and work alongside, and his commitment to helping patients with cancer was evident in everything he did. The team and I will miss him greatly. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
-Hal Mackins and the Torch team
In memory of Jon who lived life to the fullest and inspired so many. Rest in peace.

-Rich and Alice Shakarjian
Jon was a fearless leader that lived life to its fullest! His work hard/play hard philosophy led to strong engagement and fun while working in the very serious field of cancer treatments. My heart goes out to Cindi, Kyle and Natalie. May you Rest In Peace Jon, and I hope you know your legacy as a friend, colleague, mentor and coach will live on for many!
-Pat Conlon

-Dave and Marty Santos
We were so sorry to hear of Jon’s passing. He was so full of life and energy. There has never been a dad who loves his kids more than Jon. Some of Rob’s favorite memories was coaching the boys basketball teams when the boys were young. We are thinking of you Berndt Family!
-Rob, Lisa, Paige and Josh Daniels
So very sorry to hear of Jon’s passing. We had worked together at Genentech and he was a very kind and motivating individual. May he live in eternity with all the happiness he lived with while on earth.

I only knew Jon through coaching AAU basketball over the past 3-4 years on the boys and girls side. I am glad that I was able to get to know him, and always appreciated the talks/text before and after games. Jon was a coach I looked forward to seeing on the other sideline every time we played against his teams. He knew the game of basketball, got the most out of the boys and girls he coached, cared for his players and was a great competitor.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Cyndi, Kyle and Natalie.

Memorial Messages 2020
John Carroll
John was a dear college friend that I met in our freshman year. We called him “Jake” . I saw John at our 30th college reunion and he shared about how proud he was of his children John and Lydia. John was a loyal friend who never forgot his friends. He is missed by his friends in the class of 89 who remember him as a 18 year old freshman who loved to socialize, have fun and smile. He matured into a man that his parents and children should be proud of. He never forgot where he came from and is now looking down from heaven smiling at us all now.
-Mary Pat Dooley

Dear Kelly, I was so sad to hear about John. I know first hand how hard it is to lose someone before their time, especially when the appropriate medical care was not available or was tardy. I believe that the spirits or (energy- to be scientific) of those we love endure, so stay strong and stay attuned to that energy, and carry on as he would want you to. I know you will. With much love, Stacey

Scott was one of a kind. He was always willing to put his family’s needs ahead of his own – even during his final days. I will always remember him scolding me as a teenager for not reaching my full potential. I didn’t appreciate his efforts until it was too late. I will never forget all the times he sat me down to give me solid advice and life-lessons to prepare me for my future. He is missed by many.

-Kimberly and Timothy Conway
Mr. McSherry was a man who impacted countless kids and families through his leadership and commitment, especially in youth soccer. So many of us owe Mr. McSherry and his family tremendous gratitude for his positive influence.
-Craig Butera and family
Mr. McSherry was not only a coach, but like a second father. He treated myself and all the Wildcats like daughters. He taught me to work hard, to not give up, and push myself further than I thought possible in both soccer and life. He was tough, and I appreciate all he did to help make us all the best we could be. We played in rain, snow, freezing rain…..and he was right there with us. His tough exterior melted after he knew he set out for what he wanted us to accomplish- getting us all into college so that we could have the best opportunities in life. Words can’t express my gratitude. Thank you for my soccer girls, the laughs, the cries, the airports, front seats, pool parties, pizza, sleepovers, and ability to keep going when it’s tough. I’ll always remember what you did for us.
-Nicole DePalma and family

Brayden Matthew Andrews
Brayden Andrews loved sports. More specifically, he loved the Oxford Wildcats, and especially Oxford wrestling where he participated on the Middle School team. Brayden lost his battle with liver cancer on 9/13/18 at the age of 13. November 4th, 2018 should have brought Brayden’s 14th birthday, which would have coincided with what should have been his first season on the high school wrestling team, something he so greatly looked forward to. As a way to keep Brayden part of the 2018-2019 varsity wrestling team, Oxford Wrestling T-shirts were sold to raise money for Family Reach in his memory. The T-shirts contained Brayden’s initials, BMA, which covered the heart of every wrestler (and many fans) this season. Brayden had the heart of an Oxford Wildcat and the heart of a wrestler; and Brayden Matthew Andrews will always be in the hearts of the Oxford Wrestling Organization.

Kenji- I pray that your knowing how loved Kassidy was will somehow ease the pain you are feeling. The work you do for Family Reach will be a huge part of her legacy my friend. With love
-The Langs
Always in our hearts forever and ever
-Alex Loria
My heart if so full of sadness for those who love Kassidy. There are no words sufficient for comfort. Losing a child is the greatest pain anyone can suffer. However, with that said, the memories will become more clear and more beautiful as time goes by. I must warn you that after all of the caring remarks are over, the pain will deepen before it becomes easier. Losing a lovely and loving child breaks your heart but your memories in themselves, will ease the pain over time. Be thankful (everyday) for the time you shared and smiles will fill your heart
-Julane Grant Davis

Robert Storer
My dad died from prostate cancer in January. This June, in an effort to take my mind off the fact that I would be “celebrating” Father’s Day without him for the first time, I decided to raise money for Family Reach. My family was very lucky, because my dad had cancer insurance and the out of pocket expenses were minimal. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to have a loved one going through treatment and also have to worry about paying the bills or paying for medication.
-Lacey Storer

John P. McMahon
On April 27, 2012, Family Reach founders Brian and Kristina Morello were saddened by the sudden loss of their beloved Uncle John. He was an avid hunter and passed away while doing what he enjoyed most—hunting. John proudly served his country in the United State Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. John graduated from Passaic County Tech and attended William Paterson University. He later owned Beauty Guard Manufacturing, and retired in 2011 as a project manager at Bay Roofing & Construction in Fairfield. John was an active member and trustee at the West Paterson Boys and Girls Club and loved playing Texas Hold’em—recently winning 2nd place in the World Series of Poker Tournament. He leaves behind an extended family that will miss him dearly.

Kenneth J. Loehr
We are very saddened to share with you the news of the passing of Deb Loehr’s father, Ken Loehr on July 2, 2012. Many of us enjoyed watching Deb dance the evening away with her father at Oldies Night in years past, and the whole family regularly attended many of our other events. Deb has been a close friend of Mrs. Mo for many years, as one of the first tennis event committee members. From annual events to last-minute requests, Deb is always there for Family Reach, just as she was there for her father throughout his illness. We are keeping his family and friends in our thoughts. With our sympathies.
— Laura, Karen, and Michele Canetti
Ken was one of the nicest and most down-to-earth persons I have had the fortune of knowing and being friends with for many years. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him!

Jennie Podurgiel
Jennie will always be remembered for her love of family and being a devoted friend. She will also be remembered for her sense of humor, interesting stories, her love of cooking and baking—which she enjoyed sharing—and her beautiful crocheted blankets which she enjoyed making for newborns and donating to people in need.
In loving memory of Zia Jennie. Our deepest sympathies.

Jose Arroyo
Jose Arroyo was one of the most gentle men I have ever met. He was the father of my brother-in-law, 89 when he passed after a relatively brief bout with cancer. Always sweet and smiling, “Papi” was adored by his children, grandkids, and great-grandkids. He was always available for a family gathering, whether to celebrate a wedding, mourn together at a funeral, or have Thanksgiving dinner together. He was a major influence in the life of my brother-in-law, whom we all love, and he accepted my family into his unconditionally. Jose lived a life with love and dignity every day and we are so sad for his children and the world to lose him.

Nancy Morello
Nancy was a long-term resident of the nursing facility where I am employed as the 11-7 nursing supervisor. She was a delight to the staff, as were her son, Rick, and daughter-in-law, Marilyn. I was aware that their daughter, Kristine, had died as a result of cancer, but did not know the whole story. As fate would have it, one of my sons, Kevin, changed jobs and now works with Rick. How wonderful it was to reunite with Rick again. Today I went online and read the story of this great foundation and am happy to donate in memory of one of my favorite residents. I am sure Nancy is entertaining Kristine with her many stories of Italy.

Darlene Grullon
Darlene Grullon was an extraordinary young woman who enjoyed life and loved her family. Over the past two years, we had the honor and pleasure to get to know Darlene, her loving brothers and sister, and wonderful parents. Recently, we even had the pleasure to spend a memorable evening with them at the famous Blue Ginger restaurant in Wellesley, MA, hosted by celebrity chef Ming Tsai (one of Darlene’s favorites). It was a heartfelt occasion we will never forget, as Darlene’s joy, beauty, and kindness shined through in every way. We will all miss her dearly and will keep her in our thoughts as we carry on the Family Reach mission.
— With love from Family Reach
Darlene was an amazing woman and an inspiration to all with her strength and sense of humor. Your memories will live on with us and make us smile forever. You will be missed and never forgotten.

Angelina De Bellis
Angelina (née Nilio) De Bellis passed away April 30, 2011. Beautiful through all her 91 years, Angie loved to entertain her family and friends with delicious and plentiful food, wine, and intoxicating spirit. Angie worked hard, but still enjoyed leaving some behind at the casinos in Atlantic City. A better joke-teller than singer, she delighted us with both. Angie was the beloved wife of the late John De Bellis; loving mother of Jo Ann Tirelli, Michele Santoriello and her husband, George, and Lucille Ditta and her husband, Vincent; loving grandmother of Julie, Danielle, Christopher, David, and John, and four great-grandchildren, and dear sister of Teresa Legato. Her daughter, Lucille Ditta, is a Family Reach Board member and has been a devoted volunteer for over 15 years. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the entire family.

Marijean Schultz lived her life filled with love for her family. Many things bring Marijean to mind with fondest of memories. Especially of roses, humming birds, and her collections of snails.
