Family Reach Receives Game-Changing Gift from AbbVie

 In Our Mission, Partners

For the past twenty-two years, Family Reach has been in the trenches helping cancer patients deal with the financial burdens that come with receiving a cancer diagnosis.

Financial barriers affect a patient’s chance of survival.  Up to 73% of adults, and 1 out of every 3 families who have a child with cancer, will experience cancer-related financial toxicity (CRFT).

We’ve seen it all — from families living in their cars because they’ve chosen to pay their hospital bills over their mortgage, to patients forgoing life-saving treatment in order to put food on the table.

Our mission is to reach even more cancer patients BEFORE they hit financial breaking points and BEFORE their cancer care is interrupted.

Thank You AbbVie

Today, our fearless leader and CEO, Carla Tardif announced that we are one step closer to this goal because of a $5 million dollar donation from AbbVie. This monumental investment is the largest in Family Reach’s history. We would not be where we are today without the continued support of everyone who has helped Family Reach become the organization it is today.

The announcement was made live from the main stage at the Biden Cancer Summit in Washington D.C., hosted by Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden.

The Biden Cancer Summit aims to drive a sense of urgency in developing and implementing new solutions, to build a cancer community that is connected, coordinated and collaborative, and to showcase the broad range of unique cancer experiences and stories that together comprise the collective cancer narrative.

Changing the Face of a Cancer Diagnosis

Because of this game-changing gift, we’ll be able to accelerate and expand the scope of our support programs to an additional 25 hospitals in 25 states across the country to reach an estimated 4,400 families with pediatric cancer.

In 2019, we will be launching new programs to add 125 hospital-based social workers, resource navigators and nurse navigators to Family Reach’s network, expanding our reach to an estimated 200,000 people within two years.  Additionally, we will now be able to expand our financial planning resources, such as Financial Planning for Cancer, and literacy tools to additional families nationwide and also plan on launching a digital hub for improving data and information-sharing among an affiliate network of nonprofits offering financial assistance to cancer patients and their families.

We’re tremendously grateful to AbbVie and to all of our supporters for recognizing the magnitude of this issue. We believe everyone deserves a fair shot at getting to the other side of cancer. And, we won’t stop until we can make this a reality.
